What is TMS?

TMS is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation – a treatment delivered by a magnetic coil placed lightly against the scalp. The coil produces magnetic fields which induce mild currents through areas of the brain responsible for mood and anxiety.

A full course of TMS treatment is typically 20-30 sessions over 3-6 weeks.

Safe, non-invasive and based on level 1 evidence, TMS is an increasingly popular choice for depression and now for other conditions such as PTSD.

Are there side effects?

Thousands of patients have received TMS worldwide, and extensive study over thirty years has uncovered no long-term problems.

Any side-effects during treatment are almost always mild and brief, and only rarely lead to stopping treatment. The most common are passing fatigue and mild scalp discomfort or headache.

Patients may safely return to work after a session.

Is TMS effective?

Most studies have examined TMS with treatment-resistant depression. In this most difficult category, around half of patients respond to TMS, and around one third achieve full remission.

On average, the benefits of a TMS course last around one year. Booster sessions may then be used to maintain improvement.

Is TMS right for me?

While TMS is only offered after a thorough assessment with one of our psychiatrists, it may be right for you if:

  • you suffer from depression or PTSD
  • medication has failed to remove your symptoms
  • medication gives you unpleasant side effects
  • another condition interferes with taking medication
  • psychological therapy has been unhelpful or too time-consuming

TMS is likely not for you if you have a metal implant, such as a pacemaker or defibrillator.

How much does TMS cost?

Private treatment is available at $185 per session, but treatment costs may be met for DVA patients upon application. We will handle all necessary forms to assist you.
